This trail starts just off the main regional road 209 in a place called Fanal - Paúl da Serra. Walking along the Levada of Cedros, you reach Ribeira da Janela. It is one of the most amazing experiences you can have in the island's rainforest.
One of the most ancient trails
Just take a few minutes to relax at the bottom of Fanal - extinct volcanic caldera - and enjoy the cenary. Here you'll find centenaries Tis, beautifully preserved since the time the island was colonized.
The Levada of Cedros follows the steep slope of the Ribeira da Janela to its end at Curral Falso.
Be prepared to make one of the most breathtaking journey of your life!
Along the 7,5km trail, you'll find all kinds of Laurisilva plants like Til (Ocotea foetens), laurel (Laurus canariensis), Persea indica among others. Between these you'll discover beautiful wild flowers like the Madeira blueberry (Vaccinium padifolium), dog-violet (Viola riviniana), lily-of-the-valley-tree (Clethra arborea), "ensaião da Madeira" (Aichryson divaricatum), the endemic "orquídea da serra" (Dactylorhiza foliosa) and "doiradinha" (Ranunculus cortusifolius), Red Robin (Geranium robertanium) and “alegra campo anão" (Ruscus streptophyllus).
This levada walk is at the heart of the indigenous rainforest of Madeira, in excellent preservation conditions. This one is integrated in European Commission Natura 2000 network.
Once arriving at Curral Falso you have the possibility to follow to the Ribeira da Janela footpath, which gives access to the neighboring settlement.
I embraced this project in 1998 and since then it has been a great challenge. Creativity, experience, dedication and professionalism are some of our strengths. Let us plan your next dream vacation!
